| | One of Dr. Hahnemann's
contemporaries was Dr. Constantine Hering. An experienced
physician, he  observed what is known to homoeopaths
and naturopaths as the Law of the direction of Cure, known
as Hering's law. This yardstick by which any therapy can
be measured, is invaluable to the understanding of the
true status of a person's health. When a therapy is successful, real cure always begins from
the centre outwards. The individual feels better in his or
her very core, i.e. mentally and emotionally, even before
the physical symptoms are cured. The rise in energy is a
sign that the organism has responded to the remedy. The
patient says he/she feels "better in myself." Physically
the cure begins with the most important vital organs being
affected first and progresses to less important,
peripheral organs, vis. from brain, heart etc. being cured
first, to muscle and skin being cured last. This is not to
say that an organ like the skin is not important. A
disturbance in the innermost person may be expressed by
the development of an eruption on the surface of the skin.
The defence mechanism will always attempt to express
symptoms at the most peripheral level. Observation of
Hering's law in a chronic case shows the central nervous
system, circulatory system, endocrine system, digestive
system, etc., will benefit first and only later will one
see results on the skin. The most recent symptoms to
affect the patient are cured first. The most remote
symptoms (time wise) may reappear later as the cure
progresses. It's like unwrapping an onion, one layer at a
              time.
Removal of symptoms without due regard for the law of cure
is a foolish and frequently a dangerous practice. It
results in suppression of symptoms without curing the
underlying disturbance. With continued suppressive therapy
the defence mechanism will be forced to give up its
efforts on the periphery and the illness settles on a
deeper area, either in the body or in the mind. So with
much suppressive therapy an individual becomes sicker on
more serious levels. e.g. the person could become
irritable or anxious after suppressed rhinitis, which in
turn may have resulted because of long term use of
antibiotics or suppressive steroid creams on a skin
eruption. Removal of symptoms with due regard for the Law
of Similars results in a curative process that can be
monitored reliably by following Hering's law.
